hey there, i’m joanna

the youngest daughter in a family of five girls. my family is the root of my need for deep connections and the stem of my appreciation for meaningful photographs.

we’re a family of photographers + story is the centerpiece of our home. gallery walls of vintage photographs, videotapes of my sisters and i dressed to the nines to perform skits for our parents (or our interpretation of “the nines” as a family of girls in the early 2000’s with a few too many petticoats in the closet).

our first sisters-only camping trip, the last night before my oldest sister moved overseas, my dad cooking breakfast on homemade “stoves” in the middle of the Huron National Forest, laying on my mom’s lap while she read her books to me, late nights at the skating rink in the frigid Michigan winter. there are photos encapsulating most of my childhood in a way i have a deep sense of gratitude for. rarely my parents stopping the action and asking us to pose for a photo - just a moment in motion + a keen eye catching it as it flew by us. and the moments do fly by, right before our eyes.

a photo will never replace a memory, but it can stir one. that’s why this in-the-moment work is so important to me. a chance to live your story out while someone else with a keen eye catches your minutes + seconds as they fly by you, right before your eyes. someone to encourage experience + play it back to you forever with a meaningful shot. my work is playful, intimate, quiet, loud. it’s emotive + simple, sometimes complex. it’s an extension of me, my experience, my voice thru your life. i’d love to show you.

artsy fartsy, deep thinker, big feeler - you get the gist.
